Butwal Power Company Limited (BPC) has established Nepal's first private-sector 50 kW Green Hydrogen Commercial Pilot Project at Darimchaur, Pyuthan, adjacent to the 12 MW Jhimruk Hydroelectric Project. The project utilizes renewable hydropower to produce green hydrogen through electrolysis, marking an important milestone in Nepal's exploration of emerging clean energy technologies. It has been implemented with technical assistance from the World Bank and financial support from UK International Development through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The hydrogen offtake is through filling hydrogen cylinders at 200 bars to serve the local hydrogen market.
As a demonstration project, it will generate valuable insights into hydrogen production, storage, safety, operational performance, and potential end-use applications. The experience and knowledge gained from the project will support future scale-up opportunities and contribute to the development of Nepal's green hydrogen ecosystem.
