Butwal Power Company (BPC) is one of the leading companies in Nepal’s power sector with generation and distribution as its core business areas. Incorporated in 1966 as private company and converted into public limited company in 1993, BPC has a track record of pioneering multi- faceted capacity building initiatives in hydropower development.

Pursuing the privatization process, in 2003, the Government of Nepal handed over majority ownership and management control to private investors on public-private partnership model. BPC is registered with the Securities Board of Nepal and listed in Nepal Stock Exchange Limited. Starting off with electrification plan of a small city in the south of central Nepal, BPC is the only enterprise which can look back to a five decade long history of success, sustained growth and capacity building in the country.

Through its subsidiary companies, BPC is engaged in operation & maintenance of power plants, consulting engineering of hydropower and infrastructure projects, manufacturing and repair of hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment for power plants.

Senior Vice President - Investment and Projects

Sanjaya K Shrestha is the Senior Vice President, Investment and Projects. His current focus is on financial optimization and transformation, timely execution of projects and BPC’s medium- to long-term strategy and finances.

Sanjaya joined BPC in 2024 after a twenty plus year career in the United States, United Kingdom and India. He has worked in global firms such as Barclays Bank, American Express, Diageo and The Boston Consulting Group. In Nepal, he has worked in or been associated with diverse institutions such as Himalayan Bank, Nepal Electric Vehicle Industry, Shangri-la Energy, Government of Nepal’s National Planning Commission and the Artificial Intelligence Task Force of the Ministry of Communications & Information Technology.

While Sanjaya has worked in the financial services industry most of his career, his focus in the last ten years has been on digital transformation and innovation of banks and fintechs. He has helped many companies harness new technologies to transform products, services and customer experiences. He has built strategies around Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Metaverse, mobile apps, IT workforce strategy, etc. In his last role, he led partnerships with international IT services firms such as Accenture, Capgemini, IBM and Infosys for Barclays Bank globally. He has been a mentor of tech startups and entrepreneurs in the UK, India and Nepal since 2015.

Sanjaya has an MBA in Finance and Strategy from the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Economics (Honors) from Harvard University. He also has an International Baccalaureate from Pearson College (UWC), Canada.
